In a very candid interview onThe Howard Stern Show,Ben Affleckopened up about his marriage and divorce withJennifer Garner, as well as his drinking problem. He stated,“Part of why I started drinking was because I felt trapped.”Elaborating on the statement, Affleck said that while the divorce was inevitable, they still tried to make their marriage work for the sake of their three children, something which caused him to turn to alcohol.
“I was like, ‘I can’t leave because of my kids, but I’m not happy, what do I do?’ And what I did was, [I] drank a bottle of scotch and fell asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution.”
Affleck’s candid interview did some damage to his reputation and he faced a ton of backlash from fans. However, the actor later took the time to clarify his statement. During his appearance onJimmy Kimmel Live,Affleck opened up about how media websites twisted his words to sound malicious.
“[The website had] literally taken the conversation that I had for 2 hours and made it seem as if I was saying the exact opposite of what I had said. It said that I blamed my ex-wife for my alcoholism, that I was trapped in this marriage. Just made me out to be the worst, most insensitive, stupid, awful guy.”
While Garner herself never commented on the whole fiasco,Jennifer Lopezsure had something to say about it.

Was Jennifer Lopez Upset with Ben Affleck’s Comments?
When Affleck’s interview came out, it was rumored that Lopez took offense at his words as it risked painting her in a bad light since she was dating him at that point. According to one of Page Six’s sources,
“[Lopez] is pissed. She is getting pulled into this because she is dating him. She doesn’t want to be dragged into this. She has met Jennifer Garner. She is trying to get to know her and Ben’s kids. It’s reckless and cavalier of him.”
However, theAin’t Your Mamasinger made it crystal clear that that was not the case and debunked any rumors that suggested otherwise.
Talking to PEOPLE, Lopez said of the rumors,
“This story is simply not true. It is not how I feel. I couldn’t have more respect for Ben as a father, a co-parent, and as a person.”
Well, there you go. Lopez was never upset with Affleck being candid in the interview with Howard Stern and it seems like while the media might have gotten him wrong, the actress knew all along what he actually meant.
