The main character, Mare Sheehan, is played with remarkable authenticity by Kate Winslet. In addition to investigating a gritty murder, Sheehan is also exposed to the intimate and tumultuous facets of her own life.

Even though the story was well-written and Kate Winslet’s acting was exceptional and nuanced, much of the conversation that followed was focused on her physical appearance. As revealed toThe Guardian, people obsessed over her weight and looks and didn’t pay enough attention to the complex story and outstanding performance.

“People were asking, ‘Did she gain weight? Didn’t she look frumpy? Wasn’t that brave of her?’ But why should that be brave? I suppose because it’s not how leading actresses are represented. Maybe Mare will be the tipping point, and we’re going to stop scrutinising women on screen quite so much.”

Without backing down,Kate Winslettook a strong stance against unfair criticisms and the constant scrutiny women in Hollywood face. In her role as Mare Sheehan, Winslet portrays a genuine and unfiltered character that represents countless women who are tough, resilient, and authentic.

On with the show!… I took some of what I learned on Ammonite into Mare. That brooding stillness. It’s hard for me because I’m a joyful, busy, active, huggy person. That’s who I am.”
