Giving a satisfying conclusion to theInfinity Saga,Avengers: Endgamepulled off the impossible and lived up to the enormous hype that surrounded the 4thAvengersentry. But while the movie mostly serves as a homage to MCU’s accomplishments, like any other media, it isn’t immune to flaws, and following the ambitious story the writers set out to tell, it left some plot holes.

But apart from the major ones, including the issues in the final battle following editing faults, another major query arose following Ancient One’s statement regarding Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange.

We Are Just Supposed to Take MCU’s Word for It
Avengers: Endgamedoesn’t bother moving past the surface-level explanation regarding some points, including Bruce Banner’s transformation into Professor Hulk, which conveniently took place offscreen. Another doubt emerges from Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One’s statement regarding her successor. Per the Sorcerer, who was secretly drawing power from the dark dimension to extend her lifespan,“Dr. Strange was meant to be the one of our best”.So it concludes that in 400 years, no other sorcerer was worthy enough to succeed her except Strange, which seemed a little off considering we were just supposed to take the writers’ words for it.
WhileBenedict Cumberbatch‘s Strange was shown to have near-peak human motivation followed by his extreme determination to the craft, Ancient One’s statements of him being the best didn’t seem organic. And the fact the character has been seemingly nerfed in his last two outings doesn’t cement his case, however, things might eventually change as Cumberbatch is far from done from the part.

Benedict Cumberbatch Wants to Explore More Inventive Ideas Moving Forward
Although there haven’t been any confirmed reports of when Benedict Cumberbatch will pop up next in the MCU, the actor previously revealed that“There are some Marvel capers in the making next year”.While the project remains undisclosed, the actor once expressed his desire to push the concept of his battle with Sinister Strange inMOMfurther, which he deemed a“very bizarre and inventive battle”.The Power of the DogStar toldPrestige:
“We turned what was a very small combat between the two [Strange’s] into a sort of very bizarre and inventive battle in that moment. I really loved it. It was how the original was pitched to me a long while back when Scott Derrickson was still working with us: Strange would meet versions of himself. It was something I wanted to lean into. We could have gone even further, and maybe it will go into the future. Who knows what other versions we might need in the multiverse chapter of the MCU? But it was very enjoyable to play all the variants of myself.”

While it’ll be riveting to witness what the MCU has stored in for him moving forward, whether the MCU will follow up on the statements of Strange being the best remains to be seen.
