Roomunfolds the tale of young Jack, a 5-year-old who has spent his entire existence confined to a small room alongside his mother. Held captive by an unstable sexual deviant, who happens to be the boy’s biological father, the duo meticulously plot their escape. As they navigate an unfamiliar outside world, the story beautifully captures the profound love shared between mother and son.
In her preparation for the role of Ma, Brie Larson dedicated six months to immersive training, utilizing the method acting approach. This involved deeply immersing herself in her character’s experiences. To portray a survivor of captivity and sexual abuse, Larson delved into the study of the psychological effects endured by survivors, extensively researching accounts of individuals living in confinement or isolation. Variety reported her meticulous approach to the role.
Brie Larson took her preparation to the next level to embody her character fully. She consulted nutritionists to understand the consequences of vitamin deficiencies and deliberately shunned sunlight to mirror the whiteness of her character. Under the guidance of a trainer, she diligently decreased her body fat to a mere 12% while simultaneously building muscle. Larson described the role as an emotionally grueling “marathon,” leaving her utterly depleted. By the conclusion of principal filming, the intensity had reached a point where a lack of hydration hindered tears.
