When it comes to the animation of Jujutsu Kaisen’s second season, some scenes seem to fall short while others go above and beyond to prove that MAPPA is putting its everything to make the series as epic as it is. However, it is the latest episode that has crossed every pique of expectation held by fans. In terms of visual direction and narration of the story as viewers, not listeners, the animation studio has left no stone unturned with episode 37.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Choso and Itadori’s fight is a significant change in not only their dynamics but also in navigating how further events of the Shibuya arc are going to take place. There is a heavy usage of shots that are personal, something that is rather new for the series as well. Although, the highlight of the episode was most certainly the unique usage of signs and Choso’s blood in general.

Jujutsu Kaisen Bends the Norms with Choso’s Blood Manipulation

Episode 37 made a lot of visual changes from the manga to the anime. Jujutsu Kaisen saw a drift in its pacing in terms of the stakes involved. No fan is kept in the dark regarding just how gruesome the Shibuya arc is, however, it is only just the beginning, and Itadori and Choso’s fight makes that very clear. There is a unique usage of symbolism throughout the course of the episode, starting with Choso’s blood, one that is used both as a weapon and a means of narration.

Although not as significantly used as the sign boards, Choso’s blood shows just how personal the fight is for him. Not only is he ready to give up everything to avenge his brothers, but he is not afraid of the man standing before him. From the personal shots to the touch and slip of blood over Itadori’s body, it shows just how expressive Choso is when it comes to the bond he shared with his brothers, one that was taken away by Itadori.

Choso using blood manipulation

It narrates Choso’s feelings without actually saying anything. The story has a narrator, but following the course and rules of Objective Narration, there is no specific access to Choso’s inner hatred for Itadori. So, to counter that, his blood acts as a navigator. From being used as a weapon to understanding the concept of how distraught Kamo Choso is. His grief is overwhelming him and because of that, his blood acts not only as a shield but also as an expressive thought, one that begins to change upon his false memories coming into play.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Usage of Sign Boards

There is an extremely heavy usage of signboards throughout the episode. From symbolism to representation, there is one or the other message that the signs show in every single scene. Beginning with the ‘go left’ signs, many might overlook them at first, but upon further consideration, it becomes clear that the message they are trying to say is loud and clear. Go away from danger, do not proceed there is danger ahead. The cinematography and direction of the episode are absolutely remarkable.

In explaining Choso’s Blood Manipulation, fans could find themselves focusing on Mechamaru’s words but if they concentrate just a little, it would become clear that the neon arrow signs are visually representing just how his cursed technique works. The signs are quite literally explaining everything word for word. Whether in pictorial format or words written on the signboards, it is an easy explanation for the fans.

Itadori and the Do Not Cross Sign

From the beginning of the episode to the end of it, there is one sign that makes a return again and again. There is heavy use of foreshadowing with those signs. One thing fans know for certain is that Jujutsu Kaisen is not afraid of foreshadowing. The signboard is a Pedestrian Do Not Cross sign, one that is literally shadowed by Itadori as he moves towards danger, Choso. This sign keeps returning to the episode, telling him to not go forward, to not cross.

Right as it goes, Itadori’s shadow is seen in a circular light, without the cross this time, indicating his ignorance towards the signs. The very sign is later splattered by blood because of Choso. The entire station is filled with stop signs, warning Itadori. However, it is in the end that the Do Not Cross sign actually manifests. As Itadori lies defeated, there is a long white light going across his body, making it clear that this is the consequence of his battle despite the warnings.

The Mirror Transition

The concluding events of Jujutsu Kaisen’s episode 37 are one that is perhaps a massive twist for fans who do not already know. Choso is unable to kill Itadori, however, it is then that a distorted reality begins to form inside his mind, a false memory, one that does not exist in reality. Choso is seen pulling his hair, screaming in a maddening manner as the realization dawns on him, Itadori Yuji is his brother.

Throughout the memory, they can be seen enjoying and living as a content and happy family. A false memory. However, right as Itadori reaches to give Choso the bite of Spaghetti, the dream sequence breaks, along with it, the mirror. This is a clear indication of how Choso’s entire perception of reality is shattered. All that he knew is false and the man that he hated with such a passion is related to him by blood.
