The real question was,“why did Bale not sign for a fourth part of the Dark Knight world?”
When Bale was asked this question, he replied in a very simple and straight manner. He said, the fourth turn as Caped Crusader, meaningDark Knight 4, would be overindulgent. Bale said that he had made a pact with Christopher Nolan. He added, “Then when they inevitably came to us and said, ‘How about a No. 4?’ I said, ‘No. We have to stick to Chris’ dream, which was always to, hopefully, do a trilogy. Let’s not stretch too far and become overindulgent and go for a fourth.”

What pact did Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan make?
Christian Bale said,“I had a pact with Chris Nolan. We said, ‘Hey, look, let’s make three films if we’re lucky enough to get to do that, and then let’s walk away. Let’s not linger too long.’ In my mind, it would be something if Chris Nolan ever said to himself, ‘You know what, I’ve got another story to tell.’ And if he wished to tell that story with me, I’d be in.”

When Bale was asked about his appearance in reprising Batman, he said,“No. No one’s ever mentioned it to me. No one’s brought it up, occasionally people say to me, ‘Oh, I hear you were approached and offered all this.’ and I’m like, ‘That’s news to me. No one’s ever said that.’”
