Christopher Nolan is perhaps, one of the most respected individuals in Hollywood. He has gained this reputation simply through pure talent, having some of the most immersive and stunningly planned films, that can only be referred to as masterpieces. His projects like theDark Knighttrilogy,Dunkirk, Inception, and most recently,Oppenheimer, leave their audience in a trance, amazed at not only the impeccable camera work but also the deeply thought-out storylines and characters.

Anne Hathaway in Interstellar

Another perfect example of this would be his 2014 film,Interstellar, starring Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, and Anne Hathaway. Being one of his most adored spectacles, that introduced many to his works, it is interesting to find out that the film was originally going to be directed by a completely different, equally respected director, Steven Spielberg.

Christopher Nolan’sInterstellarWas Almost Directed By Steven Spielberg

Christopher Nolan’sInterstellaris truly a masterpiece, however, an interview with the director revealed that it was originally Steven Spielberg who was supposed to direct the film. While talking toThe Hollywood Reporter, he revealed that the film was originally developed by Lynda Obst, who along with Cal Tech astrophysicist, Kip Throne, thought of the concept of this after desperately wanting to make a film that walked the line of hypothetically real concept and science fiction.

“The project was originally developed by Lynda Obst. She’s great friends with Kip Thorne, an astrophysicist at Cal Tech, and their dream was to make a science-fiction film where the more outlandish concepts were derived from real-world science. They originally developed the film with Steven Spielberg at Paramount and they hired my brother to come up with a story and a script. He and I talk about everything, whether or not we’re working on it together, so I’d been hearing about it over the four years he worked on it”

In this project, they hired Spielberg to develop the film, and Nolan’s brother, Jonathan Nolan, to work on the story and script. Nolan ended up helping his brother in this project, watching from the outside as he desperately wanted to be a part of the project. He mentioned that this went on for four years as the two worked on the film, all the while, the director wanting to be the one telling this story that, in his opinion, was an exception in every way.

Christopher Nolan Got His Opportunity

It would seem that Christopher Nolan’s wishes came true as soon, as the perfect opportunity landed its way into the director’s lap. The director revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he really wanted to tell this story for one very big reason, the fact that the film, though covered in layers of scientific and cosmic events, was, at its core, about complex and intimate human relationships. This was something that he adored portraying.

“I really felt that there was an extraordinary opportunity there to tell a very intimate story of human connection and relationships and contrast it with the cosmic scale of the overall events. So when I had the chance to get involved, I wanted to jump on it because I feel that those kinds of opportunities are very few and far between, where you really see what something could be, in terms of what the balance is between the emotional side of the story and the scale of the thing, the vastness of what the story tries to encompass.”

This was why when he was given an opportunity to tell this story on screen, he jumped on it. He added that he thought that these types of things happen very rarely, so when he was given a chance to be a part of something as good as this, he took it.
