Dexter‘s Michael C. Hall and his association with dark and twisted characters have always been a selling point for audiences. The complex and grey shade of human nature is explored in most of Hall’s characters. Audiences are also tested as to how long they can keep forgiving a character as they keep on committing questionable and brutal actions.

Hall’s most memorable characters are undoubtedly Dexter Morgan fromDexterand David Fisher fromSix Feet Under. Both characters are complex and unconventional. He also played another killer in 2014’sCold in July. Hall has a unique perspective about playing another grey character that has a relativity finite arc.

Michael C. Hall Explains The Experience of Playing A Killer in A Film Than a Series
Michael C. Hall is now well known for his iconic portrayal of Dexter Morgan in the seriesDexter. Audiences have associated the actor with roles that are unconventional and which have gray undertones to them. He also played another killer in the 2014 filmCold in July. The experience of playing a killer over 8 seasons of a show and 2 hours of a film is bound to have some differences.
Hall talked about this aspect of the difference between playing a character over a finite time and playing a character over multiple seasons where the fate of the character is not known initially. He toldThe Hollywood Reporter,

“There’s something really fun about it. It’s like having love affairs after a marriage. You’re there and then it’s over. It’s very refreshing to put things down you know you won’t pick up again.”
It must have been refreshing for Hall to play a killer with different shades and motivations. The assurance and awareness of the full arc of the character must also have been a welcome change for the actor.

Michael C. Hall Addresses His Return in A PossibleDexterSpinoff Project
Michael C. Hall returned as Dexter Morgan in 2021’sDexter: New Blood, eight years after the lackluster finale of the originalDexterseries. The series was canceled after its first season and since then, two spinoff projects were announced including one which centers on the character’s son and another which focuses on his origins.
Hall talked about the possibility of returning with either of these spinoffs at a Q&A event at Steel City Con. He said,(viaComicbook.com)

“I do not think it would be a good idea for me to play a young Dexter at this point [laughs]. I think that ship sailed even before we started shooting the show, but I’m open to the possibility of being involved. It’s all kind of theoretical at this point, but I’m curious to see what they come up with… I’ve learned to never say never, but I feel like any further exploration of the world of Dexter is probably going to happen on TV screen, though they make movie things for TV.”
It remains to be seen whether Hall returns in a futureDexter-relatedproject. For now, his tenure as the notorious serial killer came to an end with the new revival series.
