Tom Hardy’s portrayal of the antagonist Bane inThe Dark Knight Risesis one of his best performances to date. Although the audience reception was mixed towards the Christopher Nolan movie, it was a good conclusion to one of the most appreciated superhero trilogies of all time. But despite giving a memorable performance, Hardy had major trouble while filming the movie.

Tom Hardy was paid less than Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises.

The character of Bane posed several challenges for Tom Hardy after he was selected for the role of the popular Batman villain. In a particular scene where the character of Bane lifted Christian Bale’s Batman, theVenomactor couldn’t do it all by himself. Even after being an active Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, he couldn’t pull off that task without external help.

How did Tom Hardy lift Christian Bale inThe Dark Knight Rises?

Christopher Nolan is known for using as much realism in his filming process as possible. But even after that, he was forced to use CGI so thatTom Hardycould tackle the physical challenge of lifting Christian Bale who weighed around 187lbs at that time.

Hardy is also a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and is currently a purple-belt holder. Even after possessing a strong physique, thePeaky Blindersactor couldn’t liftChristian Bale. According to Hardy’s trainer Mark Twight, there was technology involved that helped the actor to pull off the scene with ease.

Another set of reports also stated that theInceptionactor even had to gain extra weight for getting the desired bulkiness of Bane. In an interview with Men’s Health, Tom Hardy said that he ate a lot of pizza to gain his physique. On top of that, some camera tricks were also used to make him look bulky.

“If you really study the photographs [of Bane], I was really overweight, actually. I ate a lot and I wasn’t much heavier than I am now, but I just ate more pizza. They shoot from low to make you look big”

Bane’s mask troubled Tom Hardy inThe Dark Knight Rises

The mask of Bane also added to the menacing persona of the villain. Hardy stated that even though he enjoyed playing the character very much, the mask was as uncomfortable for him as it was for the rest of the crew.

According to Tom Hardy, the nature of the mask actually helped in the movie as everyone was naturally uncomfortable around the mask.

“It’s got a scowling grimace on it, and obviously, it looks quite claustrophobic as well. And I think that something that close to a human being’s face emanates a certain discomfort for people who are looking at him or her, you know? So it did its job.”

The difficulty elevated when the mask troubled the actor to listen to others’ dialogues and caused trouble to Christian Bale as well who couldn’t understand a word of his co-star. This led them to develop sign language to communicate with each other.

“The only downside is you can’t hear a fking word anyone is saying. Batman can’t hear me and he can’t see me speaking so we sort of stand there looking at each other for a while. We’ve been doing hand signals! I put my thumbs up when I finish my lines or I wink. And he sort of wiggles his fingers out of shot and I go, ‘OK, now I’ve got to run up and kick you in the b****s!’”

However, nothing can change Hardy of his thought that it was one of the best roles that he pulled off in his entire career. TheMad Max: Fury Roadactor also admitted that he loved playing an antagonist even more than a hero which proves how did he delivered such a terrific performance.

The Dark Knight Risescan be streamed on Max.
