Wanting her to get better roles, Depp gave her the confidence that she needed and the next thing she did was to fire her agent. Talking about it toVariety,the actress revealed that her agent at that time wanted Rosie Perez to get a nose job and dye her hair blond because she wasn’t a person of color!
“I don’t want her to be cancelled, but she told me that if I dyed my hair blond and got a nose job, ‘I can get you more jobs. Because you’re not Black.’ I couldn’t believe it. I was like, ‘Oh, my goodness. Like, thank you, fired,’”
Depp further introduced Rosie Perez to his then-girlfriend Winona Ryder and even promised her that he would toss her name in Hollywood discussions so that she might get better roles. “My first scene, Johnny Depp whispered in my ear, ‘Oh, darling, you’re too good for this s***’. Then he invited me to his trailer, and I’m thinking, ‘Oh, my God, Johnny Depp’s invited me to his trailer.’ He’s on the phone, and he goes, ‘Yeah, yeah, she’s amazing. Her name is Rosie Perez. Hang on. Hey, Rosie – over here. Say hello to my girlfriend, Winona Ryder.’”
Rosie Perez went on to star in several iconic movies while21 Jump Streetreceived a rating of 7.2/10 on IMDB. The show is currently available to stream on Prime Video in the U.S.
