PokéTsume’s, a nostalgia-filled live-action episodic series based on the 1st-genPokémongames has received its first trailer. The trailer showcases an old GameBoy running a copy ofPokémonRed, and a young woman from the Kanto region, facing the world for the first time after graduating.

After a plethora of animated mini-series and a big-budget live-action movie, the live-action TV series also looks quite promising from what’s glimpsed in the trailer. Those who grew up playing the 1st generation GameBoy gamesPokémonwill want to take a look at the trailer and the series. PokéTsume is all set to debut in Japan on the 19th of October.
PokéTsume Trailer Drops, First Generation GameBoy, and Pokémon Red Take Spotlight
PokéTsume’s trailer is here and showcases Madoka Akagi played by Nanase Nishino. The live-action TV series is set in Japan’s Kanto region which was the inspiration for the Kanto region from thePokémongames. Akagi is seen moving to Tokyo to join an ad agency.
To get off to a flying start at the ad agency, Akagi takes over a presentation at her new company and immediately starts feeling the pressure. To help Akagi deal with the stressful experience, her mother sends a care package containing an old GameBoy and a copy ofPokémonRed. After connecting back with the game she last played decades back, it helps Akagi tackle her real-life problems as well.

PokéTsume will be the first human drama based on the game, as it shows Akagi grow through her experiences with the game. She soon starts finding similarities between her beloved GameBoy game and the real world around her, even finding some of the people she interacts with represent classic characters from the game.

Nanase Nishino, who plays the lead character of Madoka Akagi in the upcoming series was a former member of Japanese idol group Nogizaka46. She started acting back in 2012 playing herself in the movie, Nogizaka Romance. Nishino won the Japan Academy Film Prize in 2022, the Japanese equivalent of the Oscars, winning the Newcomer of the Year award.
Expressing her excitement in taking up the lead role, Nishino revealed she received the offer just days after expressing her wish to play aPokémon-related role someday, and further stated:

“I’m very happy because I’m part of the generation that grew up with Pokémon, having played most of the series from the first to the latest.”
The game itself is a highly rated and critically acclaimed game that has averaged a near-perfect score from most reviewers and gamers.

The PokéTsume Trailer Features Two Player Mode, Linked With Cable Support
The original GameBoy version of the game had two editions, Red and Blue, and required players to play against each other’s edition to trade and collect all thePokémoncharacters. This was also featured in the trailer with a shot of Kageaki Hiyama and Nishino playing the game connected by a cable, sitting face to face.

In the actual game, a young kid named Ash goes on a personal adventure vying to be the nextPokémonmaster, capturing and training the characters. The game is a traditional Japanese RPG that features more than 150Pokémonfor Ash to uncover and capture. The game was a global sensation as fans fought each other’sPokémonand traded cards which was the only way to collect them all.
Several characters in the live-action TV series will be seen resembling a specificPokémon, for example, Kageaki Hiyama resembles a Charmander, while an employee in Akagi’s office resembles a Magikarp. All of this sets up a promising TV series that should satisfy fans waiting for a true live-action adaptation.
