Actor and Marvel star Samuel L. Jackson is a Hollywood veteran with a career spanning many years in the industry. His recurring role as Nick Fury, the director of S.H.I.E.L.D in the MCU was instrumental in elevating his popularity among audiences. Before these films though, his journey to the big leagues began with director Quentin Tarantino’s cult classicPulp Fiction.

Quentin Tarantino put Samuel L. Jackson on the map

Quentin Tarantino’sPulp Fictionis still considered the director’s most accomplished film to date. The film starringJohn Travolta, Uma Thurman, and Samuel L. Jackson follows the story of two hitmen with an affinity for philosophical discussions. The movie with its stylish aesthetic that would define Quentin Tarantino’s unique brand of filmmaking in the future, went on to win the Oscar in 1995 for Best Original Screenplay.

Before the role of Jules inPulp Fiction,Samuel L. Jackson worked in smaller parts in films likeJurassic Park,Eddie Murphy’sComing To America, Spike Lee’sDo The Right Thing,and other movies. Though these films gave the actor a stepping stone in the right direction, it was only after Quentin Tarantino cast him inPulp Fictionthat his acting career took off swiftly. His portrayal of the hitman Jules and his chemistry with John Travolta was lauded and appreciated, giving rise to more significantroles being offered by other filmmakers.

Pulp Fictionmarked the beginning of a series of 6 films that Samuel L. Jackson and Quentin Tarantino collaborated on. It is the most number of times that any actor has appeared in the maverick director’s films. Apart fromPulp Fiction,the star played significant roles inDjango Unchained, Kill Bill, Jackie Brown, The Hateful Eight,andInglorious Basterds,in which he was the narrator.

There is no doubt that while Quentin Tarantino was the lucky charm in Samuel L. Jackson’s upward career graph, the director also benefitted from the talented actor’s presence in each of his films. With theKill Billfilmmaker announcing that he will be creating an 8-part television series in 2023, it would be interesting to see if Samuel L. Jackson will feature in it.
