“Oh my God. We’re going to just stick with some lions and some dolls for the moment. But you never know. I really like [Bond franchise producer] Barbara Broccoli, so…”

After a year and a half of hype, anticipation, and interviews, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie finally hit theaters this past weekend and made a huge splash with a $162 million debut. It also created history of sorts by being the highest-grossing opening weekend ever for a film directed by a woman. Though Gerwig had high hopes forBarbie,nothing prepared her for how well her unique spin on the Mattel doll has been received by audiences across the world.
“I wanted to make something anarchic and wild and funny and cathartic. I think it was a particular ripple in the universe that allowed it to happen. I’m so grateful. I’m so amazed. I’m at a loss for words, really. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine something like this”.
Gerwig went on to add that the film was her way of answering many of her detractors who were doubtful about how she would bring depth to a character like Barbie who has always been stereotyped as superficial and shallow.
