Martin Scorsese is not only a great director, but he knows a lot about the film industry, too. Like many other Hollywood directors, Scorsese is famous for taking risks with different film genres. His ability to tackle various genres has left a lasting impact on audiences.
His greatness can be attributed to his impact on the art of cinema, which has changed the course of filmmaking. Scorsese won an Oscar for Best Director for his 2006The Departed, which also took home the Best Picture, Best Editing, and Best Adapted Screenplay for William Monahan.
Many critics believe this is the accolade he would have received much earlier. The director started his career in 1967 at 25 with his first theatrical film,Who’s That Knocking at My Door.

Martin Scorsese Regrets MakingShutter Island
At 80,Martin Scorseserealizes time is running out, and he is about to turn 81. In an interview withGQ, the director hints at regrets about makingShutter Island, which he calls“the last studio film I made.”He thinks he should have gone directly toSilenceand skipped that one starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
After winning an Oscar forThe Departedin 2006, he said it“encouraged me to make another picture with Shutter Island. It turned out I should have gone on probably to do Silence.”
No doubt,Silenceis one of Scorsese’s best works. This historical epic has been Scorsese’s passion project for over 25 years — adapted from the 1966 novel of the same name by Shusaku Endo — and has been adapted into a movie once before (in Japan in 1971).
Shutter Islandhas many fans, and there should be no regrets about making that entertaining genre film. But Scorsese believes that as he is getting older, he shouldn’t spend time on less essential projects.

Martin Scorsese Believes He Can Do Just One or Two More Films — Disappointing for Fans
The director believes he can only do one or two more films — considering 3-4 years per film. He said in the same interview withGQ:
“And if I could just muster up the energy, God willing, to make a couple more, one more maybe, and that’s it, OK? That’s as far as I got. You keep going until you can’t.”
The filmmaker is working on an adaptation of Marilynne Robinson’s novel,Home, with director Todd Field and then with Kent Jones before the WGA strike. But he again questions —“How much longer can it be me? I’m gonna be 81.”
Now that the WGA strike is tentatively over, we can expect more news about the planned films of Scorsese in the future. His next project is the highly anticipatedKillers of the Flower Moon.
After that, (according to the sources) Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio will team up for their next project,The Wager, which is adapted from David Grann’s non-fiction book depicting a shipwreck story in the 1740s.
