PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are the only two options for AAA gaming in the current generation of consoles. The consoles were released in 2020, and the PS5 has been the fan favorite considerably.

PlayStation 5 just got a slimmer look this Holiday season.

Now statistics have come up, and they state that Sony’s latest console has quite literally demolished its competitor regarding sales. The lifetime sales for Sony’s premier console have almost reached 50 million units. The console is geared to shatter records shared by its predecessor, the PS4. Reports by various news agencies suggest that the console has been bought extensively, and Sony has experienced its best Holiday sales.

PlayStation 5 Miles Ahead of Xbox Series X/S In Terms of Sales

It is not breaking news that the PS5 outsells its market competitors. The console has been the go-to choice for consumers as per date from websites likeVGChartz. Executives from Sony had recently stated that the console is now entirely in stock everywhere in the market. This was after the console was particularly hard to procure due to the global chip shortage, which affected sales severely.

Now, after Black Friday has passed, when one of the best deals for technology and gaming is found, PlayStation 5’s sales record has gained even more momentum than before. The news agencyReutersreported that the console is on track to achieve its sales target of 25 million units in the financial year ending in March 2024. If it manages to do so, the feat will mark Sony selling the most consoles in a single financial year.

The most powerful gaming console to exist couldn’t defeat Sony’s PlayStation 5.

When the console hit 40 million units in July, it was still two months behind its predecessor. Now, thanks to Black Friday deals and the continuous enthusiasm among console game lineup fans, the console reached 50 million units as per the reputed news websiteFinancial Times.

Sony managed to achieve these numbers in 161 weeks in total as compared to the 160 by PS4. It is staggering how the console managed to shrink the lead of its processor in terms of sales. The company’s senior Vice President for Global Marketing, Eric Lampel, had this to say to Reuters on the console’s current success:

Pokémon TCG Pocket Has A Major Limitation Which Is Raising Concerns about Potential Monetisation Issues Down The Line

Given the momentum we’ve had in November and a lot of what we’re seeing in December, just in general, we’re feeling very good about sales overall,

Unsurprisingly, the latest PlayStation is outshining Xbox regarding sales because the former has a better and more well-rounded product. While Xbox continues to acquire studios and keeps many users engaged by offering day-one releases and a colossal library of games with its Game Pass offering, it isn’t enough because the PS5 is a better product.

This is despite the Series S offering easy access to the next generation for budget gamers and the Series X being the most powerful gaming console on paper.

There is also a lack of path-breaking exclusive titles found on the PS5 due to the quality of studios under the PlayStation Interactive Entertainment Umbrella. Some of the finest studios currently active in the industry, such as Santa Monica Studios, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac, are first-party PlayStation studios mainly catering to the PlayStation console lineup. Almost all of their titles are either exclusives or timed exclusives.

Is There Any Hope for Xbox to Emerge Victorious Against PlayStation?

Despite having much to offer users on paper, Xbox has failed miserably in regions likeEurope. The official sales numbers are unknown since the video game giant insists on releasing them as it doesn’t consider sales to be the metric it focuses on.

All of this begs the question: will anything Xbox ever do be enough to take on the PlayStation? Numbers indicate that Microsoft has long lost the console wars, and this was even claimed by the giant and was used as an excellent reason during its FTC court trials while attempting to acquire Activision.

Xbox already owns many studios, and its media offerings are second to none in quantity. However, as the past has shown, it is anything but a numbers game when enticing users is concerned.

Statistics are based on official numbers by Microsoft and speculation and number-crunching from experts at websites likeVGChartz. One can see that Microsoft is second only to PlayStation but also to Nintendo Switch. Sony’s gaming console sales rose to 65 percent per financial time.

On the other hand, Microsoft’s console sales (per speculation) declined by about 15 percent. That is almost an 80 percent difference! Xbox has to step up its game with the next generation of consoles. Otherwise, the PlayStation is showing no signs of stopping.
