It goes without saying that Batman is one of the best characters to have come out of the comic book pages. For decades, the superhero has ruled the film and TV industry and the reign continues uninterrupted. Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher, Christopher Nolan, Matt Reeves, and so on, have each had a go at bringing the character to life.

Tim Burton’s version of the superhero was played by Michael Keaton, who has reprised his role inThe Flash. While we all know that Tim Burton is responsible for two Batman films,BatmanandBatman Returns,do we know what inspired him to make the sequel? Well, it wasn’t as much an inspiration as it was the desire to do something new, something which was not quite as“boring.”

Not only wasBatman(1989) a critical success, but it also performed exceptionally at the box office. Made with a budget of $48 million, the movie grossed $411 million at the box office. It is quite clear that the film was loved by many, however, Tim Burton had his reservations.

Talking to Empire, Burton stated that he was not quite happy with howBatmanturned out. DespiteMichael Keaton’s effortless performance, Burton revealed that he found the film to be boring at times. Therefore, when he decided to make a sequel, he wanted to do things differently. He wanted to make a completely new film.
“There’s parts I liked, but it was a little boring at times. Oftentimes with sequels, they’re like the same movie except everything gets jacked up a little. I didn’t feel I could do that; I wanted to treat this like it was another Batman movie altogether.”

Batman Returnsreceived mostly positive reviews from critics who could see how the film differed from its predecessor. It went on to make $266 million at the box office on a budget of $50-80 million. On Rotten Tomatoes,Batman Returnshas a higher score (81%) thanBatman(74%). Looks like Burton’s idea worked.

Michael Keaton Talks about his Return
After more than three decades, Keaton has finally returned to play the Caped Crusader once again. It’s interesting to think about what made the actor pick up the cape once again after all these years. Well, let’s hear it from Keaton himself. In an interview with Empire, Keaton stated,
“It seemed like fun. I was curious what it would be like after this many years. Not so much me doing it – obviously, some of that – but I was just curious about it, weirdly, socially. This whole thing is gigantic. They have their entirely own world. So, I like to look at it as an outsider, thinking, ‘Holy moly’”!
On top of the curiosity, Keaton stated that the writing forThe Flashwas really good and he could not think of a single reason to not join the ensemble.
