Zack Snyder’s film career has been rife with great films with great sequels. Unfortunately, it is not often that the director gets to make a third entry in any franchise. Save theJustice League(which also came at the heels of a massive fan campaign), the director had seldom been able to complete a trilogy (if ever) on his terms. However, it seems the director’s deal with Netflix might change that completely.

Zack Snyder wanted to initially makeRebel Moonas an R-ratedStar Warsfilm, which he would pitch to Lucasfilm. However, the franchise was bought out by Disney. Being a family-friendly brand, Snyder gave up all hopes of putting the film to screen. However, Netflix gave the film a shot, albeit as a two-parter, since Snyder’s initial pitch was unbearably long for the streaming giant.

Currently, Netflix and Snyder are gearing up for the release of the first part ofRebel Moon, titledA Child of Fire. The film will be released on December 22nd, 2023. The following film,The Scargiver, the second film in the franchise, is scheduled to hit streaming 4 months later, in April 2024. Currently, according toThe Hollywood Reporter, the third film is being scripted by Snyder, but no other information has been made public about it. However, Snyder has made it known that he would like the film to become an IP on par withStar Warsand Marvel, so fans can expect that Netflix will be investing heavily into the franchise if it does well.

Post Warner Brothers, Zack Snyder has a place for his300-inspired film.

Recently, the Justice League director has come into the rights of Blood and Ashes, a script that initially started out as a sequel to300and300: Rise of the Empire. Snyder began to develop the script, causing it to evolve into a completely different historical war epic, focusing on Alexander the Great and his second in command  Haphaestion. The film was supposed to be a love story between the pair, and was championed by Warner Executive Courtenay Valenti. The director said:

“We got the rights back so we can make if we want it. I don’t know what the marketplace is for an incredibly homoerotic, super violent, super sexual movie. But maybe it’s perfect.”

Given the popularity of works likeThe Song of Achilles, Snyder might find himself uniquely positioned to make a violent, historical, epic love story with its focus on the characters and how they navigate historical events that we see from a wider lens in a personal capacity.
